Tim Cook will step down as Apple’s CEO on September 1, handing the role to the company’s head of hardware engineering, John Ternus. A report says it has obtained Cook’s full memo to employees, written on his final day as chief executive.
Tim Cook’s farewell memo
In the memo, Cook opens plainly: “Today is my last day as CEO of Apple.” He thanks employees for their support and attributes any success he has achieved to the team: “The truth is, whatever there is to say about my success, I know it is all because of you. You have brought out the best in me.” He praises Apple’s culture and purpose, writing that the company is “proof that culture triumphs over everything” and that together employees have created “something far greater than any one of us could have imagined or accomplished alone.”
Cook makes clear he is not leaving the company entirely: “As you know, I am not leaving Apple. But I am stepping away from a role that I have loved deeply.” He adds that he will miss leading the company even as he is “completely at peace with my decision,” and expresses confidence in his successor: “I will miss leading you and being with you for every step, even as I take enormous comfort in handing the helm to someone as brilliant and wonderful and capable as John.”
He closes by reiterating his gratitude and continued presence at Apple: “I look forward to seeing you in my new role at Apple Park and around the world.” The memo ends with his sign-off: “With all I have and all I am, I am always\n\nYours,\n\nTim.”
