Apple is anticipated to introduce an AI feature for creating shortcuts using natural language in its Shortcuts app with iOS 27. However, an innovative tool called Shortcuts Playground, developed by Federico Viticci, offers a similar capability today. This plugin, compatible with Claude Code and OpenAI Codex, allows users to generate shortcuts for the Apple Shortcuts app through simple natural language commands. Users can type a brief request, and the completed shortcut is quickly prepared for upload to the Shortcuts app.
Shortcuts Playground is free, open source, and available on GitHub, complete with comprehensive documentation. While the AI tools can help correct errors during the creation process, users are advised to verify the accuracy of the generated shortcuts.
To access Shortcuts Playground, users need to direct Claude Code or OpenAI Codex to the GitHub repository, where the plugin can be found and installed. Example shortcuts include locating a parked car and adjusting display settings with Focus mode at night.
Additionally, Club MacStories+ and Premier members can access Shortcuts Playground as a generative shortcut, enabling the creation of more shortcuts directly on their devices. A newly redesigned MacStories Shortcuts Archive offers over 400 pre-built shortcuts for users to explore.
