TrustedRouter has raised $6 million in a seed round led by Sierra Ventures, positioning itself in the growing “model routing” market as a challenger that emphasizes stronger data protections. The model-routing sector helps companies switch between AI models to cut costs and manage workloads.
OpenRouter currently dominates the space: it launched with a $12.5 million funding round in early 2025 and was acquired by Stripe recently for $7.5 billion.
TrustedRouter’s security approach
TrustedRouter is betting on end-to-end encryption and confidential computing to guarantee that neither TrustedRouter nor the data centers running the models can see customer requests or AI outputs. That protection is presented as a key differentiator from major providers such as OpenAI and Anthropic, and from OpenRouter, none of which currently offer the same guarantees.
Routing across open-source models
The platform currently lets users route requests among multiple open-source models. Chinese models from DeepSeek, Zhipu and Moonshot are highlighted as particularly popular with users, while newer Western open models from companies such as Mistral and Reflection AI have also appeared recently.
Plans for an AI token exchange
TrustedRouter says it aims to launch what it describes as a ‘New York Stock Exchange for AI tokens,’ a marketplace where any data center equipped with an open model could compete to fulfill each request. The company envisions AI tokens becoming tradable financial instruments akin to oil or energy contracts.
The service may appeal to software developers who need to route workloads across multiple models while maintaining maximum data protection. Whether TrustedRouter can expand beyond this specialized niche will depend heavily on how open-source models evolve.
Closed solutions from OpenAI and Anthropic remain ahead on output quality, despite higher cost and fewer privacy guarantees, leaving institutions to weigh a trade-off between quality, cost and privacy.
