What are the new satellite features Apple is developing for the iPhone?

Apple is actively developing a range of new satellite connectivity features for the iPhone. Among these innovations are satellite navigation for Apple Maps, enabling users to navigate without needing cellular or Wi-Fi connections. The Messages app will soon support sending photos via satellite. Additionally, Apple is working on allowing satellite connectivity indoors without requiring the device to be pointed at the sky. Another feature in development is the integration of satellite support with 5G networks to enhance coverage. Furthermore, a new API framework will let third-party developers incorporate satellite connectivity into their apps, though not all services will be compatible. Currently, there are no plans to enable phone calls, video calls, or web browsing via satellite. While Apple’s existing satellite features are free, future advanced capabilities may involve direct payments to satellite carriers. Apple is also considering a paid option for extended connectivity with companies like SpaceX. However, internal discussions about launching its own satellite service have stalled due to concerns about Apple acting like a carrier. The rollout of these new features will likely depend on upgrades to Globalstar’s infrastructure, which Apple has financially supported. If SpaceX acquires Globalstar, these enhancements could be accelerated.
