What are the six tech trends from The Traka and their implications for Unbound Gravel?

The Traka, Europe’s premier gravel race, is emerging as a significant event alongside the renowned Unbound Gravel in Kansas. Both races occur within weeks of each other, allowing trends observed in Girona to potentially influence those in Emporia. After immersing in The Traka for three days, insights into the gravel biking scene have surfaced.

A notable trend is the shift towards larger MTB-style tires, with all new bikes at the event accommodating tires measured in inches rather than millimeters. This change enhances performance on rough terrains, offering reduced rolling resistance and fewer flats, despite a slight aerodynamic trade-off.

The distinction between bike genres is blurring, with gravel bikes adopting features from road and mountain bikes. This evolution suggests a need for a new classification system based on terrain rather than traditional categories.

The Traka also showcased a saturation of new bike models and technology, rivaling other major bike events. Girona’s accessibility and financial appeal have turned it into a hub for brand activations and new releases.

While aerodynamic designs are prevalent, the recent victories of non-aero bikes indicate that while aero features are beneficial, they are not decisive in challenging courses.

SRAM has gained dominance in the gravel sector, overshadowing Shimano, which struggles to keep pace with wireless advancements. Shimano needs to enhance its mass appeal to regain market share.

Finally, the use of deep, wide wheels is gaining traction, with brands like Newmen and Enve leading the trend. This could become more pronounced at Unbound, where flatter terrain may favor the aerodynamic advantages of such wheels.
