Apple is already looking ahead to its next MacBook Air, following the release of the M5 chip model in March 2026. The upcoming MacBook Air is expected to feature the M6 chip, potentially marking a significant step in Apple’s chip technology. While the M5 chip uses TSMC’s 3nm N3P process, the M6 may adopt a new packaging method, possibly using a 2nm process with WMCM packaging for more integrated and powerful chipsets. This change could see components like the CPU, GPU, DRAM, and Neural Engine more tightly integrated.
Apple is reportedly securing a large portion of TSMC’s N2 production for its A20 chips, which could later influence the MacBook lineup. Despite these potential internal changes, the MacBook Air’s design is expected to remain largely the same, with minimal hardware updates. Looking further ahead, Apple plans to incorporate OLED display technology, but this is not expected until at least 2028.
In terms of pricing, the entry-level M6 model may see a price increase from the current starting price of $1,099 for the M5 model. This is due to rising costs in memory and storage driven by increased demand from AI companies, leading to chip shortages and higher prices. Apple CEO Tim Cook has indicated that price increases are unavoidable, although the company is attempting to mitigate these impacts.
As for the release, Apple’s MacBook Air updates have followed a consistent annual schedule in recent years, suggesting the M6 model could launch around March 2027.
