The After School Education and Safety Program aims to encourage the development of locally-driven Expanded Learning initiatives. These initiatives, including after school programs, partner with public schools and communities to offer academic and literacy support, as well as safe and constructive activities for young people. Originating from Proposition 49, approved by voters in 2002, the program fosters collaborations between schools and local community resources. It focuses on providing literacy and academic enrichment, along with safe alternatives for students from kindergarten to ninth grade. The funding is intended to sustain existing before and after school programs and open eligibility to all elementary and middle schools in California that submit high-quality applications. This announcement marks the second round of applications for the 2025-26 period.
