What’s the Future of the iPad?

In the latest episode, discussions revolve around Apple’s anticipated updates for the iPad mini and iPad Air, focusing on significant enhancements and future prospects for the product lineup. The iPad mini 8 is expected to transition from an LCD to an OLED display, with a single-stack LTPS panel that, while less bright than the iPad Pro’s OLED, marks a notable improvement. The screen size is anticipated to increase from 8.3 to 8.7 inches, with ProMotion as a potential feature. There is uncertainty regarding the chip, with possibilities ranging from the A19 Pro to the unreleased A20 Pro, alongside the likely inclusion of N1 and C1X chips. Notably, Apple is reportedly developing a more water-resistant design for the iPad mini, potentially making it the first to receive an official IP rating. A redesigned, thinner chassis is expected to accommodate these upgrades, possibly raising the price by $100 to approximately $599, with a release projected for the second half of 2026. Meanwhile, an update to the iPad Air is anticipated in early 2027, featuring a switch to OLED and a design akin to the iPad mini, alongside the M5 chip. The next iPad Pro, expected in spring 2027, will likely include an M6 chip and a vapor chamber cooling system, with no significant design changes. The gap between the iPad Air and iPad Pro is expected to narrow with these updates, while a foldable iPad, featuring an 18-inch display, is speculated for release no earlier than 2029, potentially priced at $3,900.
