WhatsApp security alert requires OS updates before login

A new WhatsApp security alert will require users to update their device operating system before they can log in to the app on Android and iPhone. The alert appears when someone attempts to access WhatsApp from a device running an outdated OS and instructs them to open their device settings and install the latest available update before continuing. Users cannot skip this requirement; if the app blocks their login, they must install the device software update to regain access.

The requirement is delivered via a server-side update, so users do not need to install a new version of the WhatsApp app to receive the alert. WhatsApp has not specified which operating system versions will trigger the login restriction, and the rollout may take time to reach all supported devices.

What the WhatsApp security alert means for users

The measure underscores the importance of keeping smartphones updated: operating system updates often include security patches that fix vulnerabilities and protect devices against potential attacks. Outdated operating systems can expose devices to known security flaws that cybercriminals might exploit to install malicious software, access sensitive information, or intercept stored data. While WhatsApp provides security features for conversations and accounts, overall protection also depends on the security of the device itself. By requiring available OS updates, WhatsApp aims to reduce risks associated with outdated software and to encourage users to keep their devices current.

Other features WhatsApp is developing

WhatsApp is also developing and rolling out several other features across Android, iOS, iPad and Mac. On iOS, the app is receiving a refreshed video player using Apple’s Liquid Glass design, with a translucent progress bar with rounded corners and a redesigned control bar; the new player is also arriving on iPad and Mac. Android is being tested with a dedicated Contacts tab that provides a central place to view contacts, identify people who are online, check birthday reminders and invite new users, and that will allow sorting contacts by activity or alphabetically while respecting existing privacy settings. Another Android improvement lets users play Status updates at double speed by pressing and holding the right side of the screen, with the faster playback active only while the screen is held. For iOS, WhatsApp is testing a redesigned chat navigation that adds a shortcut to access useful conversation options without opening the chat information screen, and a redesigned Settings interface that separates frequently used options from other settings to make it easier to find privacy, notifications, storage, linked devices and parental controls.

Users who see the alert should follow its instructions and install the latest available operating system update for their device. Regularly checking device settings for OS updates can help maintain compatibility with apps and protect against known security threats.
