Who Can Claim Money from the Comcast Settlement?

Comcast has reached a $117.5 million class-action settlement following a cybersecurity breach that potentially exposed customer data. This settlement could make thousands of current and former customers eligible for compensation. Data breaches are a growing concern, prompting companies to enhance their cybersecurity measures to avoid costly legal consequences.

The settlement addresses claims that Comcast did not adequately protect sensitive customer data during a security incident in October 2023. Although Comcast has not admitted any wrongdoing, the settlement highlights the financial risks companies face when personal information is compromised.

Eligibility for compensation depends on whether a customer’s data was affected. Those who may qualify include customers whose information was involved in the breach and individuals notified about the incident in December 2023. Specific eligibility criteria will be detailed in official notices, and not all Comcast customers will qualify.

The lawsuit alleged that personal or account information was exposed, with inadequate security measures for Xfinity users. Affected individuals faced risks such as identity theft or fraud.

Payouts will vary based on several factors, including the number of valid claims and documented losses from fraud or identity theft. The maximum payment is set at $10,000 for those who can prove out-of-pocket losses, with claims due by August 14. Alternatively, claimants can opt for a $50 cash payment, subject to change based on the number of claims.

Final approval for the settlement is expected on July 7, with payments to follow soon after.
