Why are Microsoft users on high alert?

A high-security alert has been issued for users of Microsoft Windows, Office, and Edge by India’s cybersecurity agency. Critical vulnerabilities have been identified in these products, posing a significant risk of hacking. The warning affects various systems, including Windows Server versions, Windows 10, and Windows 11, as well as everyday Office tools and the Edge browser. Both individual users and businesses are at potential risk.

The vulnerabilities, if exploited, could allow attackers to execute arbitrary code, gain extensive system privileges, steal sensitive data, or even disable entire systems. These issues stem from technical flaws like poor input verification, memory errors, and weak access controls. Even minor user errors, such as opening suspicious files, can trigger an attack, with some attacks requiring no additional authorization.

The risk is heightened for those using administrator accounts, as hackers could exploit these to gain greater control, leading to data theft or service disruptions, particularly in corporate environments.

To mitigate these risks, users are urged to update their systems immediately. Regular updates are the most effective defense against such cyber threats.
