Moonshot pauses new sign-ups for Kimi K3 after surge in demand overwhelms capacity
Moonshot’s new AI model, Kimi K3, has temporarily halted new user registrations after a massive influx quickly exceeded the startup’s capacity, the Beijing-based company said. Publicly launched last week, Kimi K3 drew “far higher than expected” demand, and Moonshot says it is prioritizing existing subscribers while scaling up resources.
Crushing demand forces temporary pause
In posts on X and Chinese social platforms, Moonshot AI said that “over the last 48 hours, demand pushed close to the limits of our current capacity.” The company plans to reopen sign-ups in waves as it brings additional capacity online. The temporary suspension is intended to preserve service quality for existing users as the system scales.
Why Kimi K3 needs so much compute
Kimi K3 is billed as a 2.8-trillion-parameter open-source model — one of the largest public architectures to date — making it extremely compute-intensive. “New model releases typically trigger massive interest that can strain existing compute infrastructure,” said Lian Jye Su, an analyst at Omdia. He added that Moonshot likely underestimated the level of demand and now faces the cost and complexity of procuring enough compute chips to serve everyone.
Performance and market reaction
After its public release, Kimi K3 ranked strongly on Arena, a model-evaluation platform, leading advanced models on front-end coding capability. The launch also raised market concerns: the arrival of powerful, potentially lower-cost Chinese models is reshaping expectations for U.S. AI players that are already navigating export controls limiting China’s access to certain advanced technologies, including high-end chips.
Context: China’s accelerating AI push
Kimi K3 is the latest in a wave of recent Chinese model launches. Open-source, lower-cost models like DeepSeek V4 have gained international attention since 2025. Alibaba has released Qwen3.8 Max (2.4 trillion parameters), and startup Zhipu (Z.ai) recently rolled out GLM-5.2 — all seen as serious global contenders in large-model development.
The temporary signup freeze for Kimi K3 highlights the tension between surging user demand and infrastructure capacity for very large models. Moonshot is racing to expand resources while protecting service for its early users, and the rapid rise of such models is sharpening the debate over the technological race between China and the United States.
