Why does Apple update all devices at once, but Samsung doesn’t?

The Samsung Galaxy S series is among the brand’s most popular smartphones, with millions sold worldwide. Despite their popularity, there’s growing criticism regarding Samsung’s approach to software updates for its flagship devices. Currently, Samsung releases new versions of its One UI system in phases, starting with the latest flagship models before moving on to older devices. This staggered approach has led to dissatisfaction among users of older models who feel they deserve timely updates just like new device owners.

There are compelling reasons for Samsung to reconsider its strategy and provide simultaneous updates for all Galaxy S and foldable models. Timely updates enhance customer satisfaction and brand loyalty, as users appreciate receiving the latest features promptly. Moreover, satisfied customers often become brand advocates, promoting the brand more effectively than traditional marketing.

Looking ahead, the next iteration, One UI 8.5, is already available for the Galaxy S26, A57, and A37 models. As for One UI 9, based on Android 17, Galaxy S26 users can expect a beta release by May, with a stable version anticipated by July 2026. To address the challenge of timely updates, Samsung might need to bolster its development team. Competing with Apple and Google, where swift software support is crucial, Samsung must strive for improvement.

Apple’s approach stands out due to its control over its ecosystem. When Apple releases a new iOS version, it becomes available to all supported devices simultaneously, ensuring no user feels left behind. This seamless update process is challenging for Samsung due to hardware fragmentation, reliance on Google’s Android, carrier-specific approval processes, and a vast device portfolio. Despite improvements, matching Apple’s update model remains an elusive goal for Samsung. Nonetheless, focusing on its premium Galaxy S line could be a step towards achieving this level of update consistency.
