Will Biota’s $3M raise accelerate PFAS testing deployment?

Longmont, Colo. — July 29, 2026 — Biota Inc., an environmental diagnostics startup, has closed a $3 million seed round led by Burnt Island Ventures, with significant participation from DeepWork Capital and renewed support from Antler, Beyond Utility Water Ventures and the Deming Center Venture Fund. The financing will accelerate commercial deployment of Biota’s PFAS testing solutions for both field and laboratory environments.

A round to scale PFAS testing
The $3 million round gives Biota the capital and strategic backing needed to broaden commercialization of its measurement tools. Tom Ferguson, founder and managing partner at Burnt Island Ventures, says the scale of the PFAS problem requires “fundamentally faster and more distributed testing infrastructure,” and believes Biota’s team combines scientific capability with an understanding of analytical bottlenecks. Benjamin Patz, managing partner at DeepWork Capital, added that Biota’s technology addresses a growing market need and could transform how contamination is measured and managed.

Two technologies for field and lab
Biota is developing a platform that spans rapid field screening and accelerated laboratory sample preparation. RapidTest™ is positioned as a quick-screen solution that delivers results in roughly 15 minutes, aimed at field interventions and initial assessments. MagnaPrep™ uses proprietary magnetic nanoparticles to simplify and speed sample preparation ahead of laboratory analysis. Biota’s scientific team is evaluating formulations of magnetic nanoparticles designed to streamline those preparation steps.
