Is “Who asked for this?” the wrong question for innovation in 2025?

In 2025, the phrase “Who asked for this?” has become a popular response on social media to new tech products that fail to make a significant impact. Devices like the Galaxy S25 Edge and the iPhone Air have been targets of such criticism. However, dismissing products simply because no one explicitly requested them might undermine the spirit of innovation. Historically, many successful inventions, such as the TV or the iPhone, were not demanded by consumers before they existed.

The argument is that innovation requires experimentation and taking risks, even if some products do not succeed. While it is valid for companies to cater to consumer demands, it is equally important for them to explore uncharted territories. The failure of compact flagship phones, despite vocal demand, illustrates that consumer requests do not always translate to market success.

Critiquing products with “Nobody asked for this” might be catchy and meme-worthy, but it does not offer constructive feedback for future innovation. Encouraging companies to take creative risks is essential for technological advancement. Ultimately, while opinions may vary, the dialogue on innovation should focus on fostering creativity rather than adhering strictly to consumer expectations.
