Has Samsung’s plan to create custom AI chips for ChatGPT encountered a setback?

In 2024, Samsung was reported to be developing AI chips for OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, has made several visits to South Korea, engaging with Samsung’s leadership and establishing agreements. However, recent reports from South Korea suggest that plans for custom chips may have stalled due to strategic differences between OpenAI and Samsung Electronics. Despite significant progress in the development of an inference neural processing unit based on ARM architecture, efforts have reportedly slowed. This development coincides with Samsung’s recent investment in Anthropic, a prominent US AI startup known for Claude, with potential plans to produce AI chips for them as well. Despite the current chip-related disagreements, Samsung and OpenAI continue to collaborate across various sectors, having signed multiple agreements last year for Samsung to provide diverse services to OpenAI.
