Will Albanese launch an AI Office without copyright reform?

The federal government will today announce the creation of an Office of AI within the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, but Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is not expected to pursue copyright reform to make it easier to train artificial intelligence systems.

An Office of AI to coordinate the national strategy
According to a preview of Albanese’s speech, the Office of AI will be tasked with coordinating the development of new Australian standards for artificial intelligence and consolidating the work of relevant ministers. The prime minister frames the move as an end to a “piecemeal” approach across issues ranging from data-centre policy and shifts in the workforce to copyright and the use of machine learning in defence.

No copyright reform expected
The announcement is not expected to include any immediate changes to copyright law to facilitate AI training.
