Has Pilot Protocol launched an AI agent network with $4.5M in seed funding?

Pilot Protocol steps into the spotlight with a $4.5 million seed round to build a communications and commerce network for AI agents. Founded in San Francisco, the startup is creating an infrastructure that allows agents to discover one another, authenticate, communicate, and transact without human configuration.

A live, fast-growing AI-agent network
Pilot says roughly 250,000 agents are already connected to its network, collectively generating close to 2 billion requests per day. Adoption, the company claims, has been organic: agents install the platform and recommend it to one another. During the initial rollout, growth reportedly reached up to 10% per day, with spikes exceeding 16,000 new agents in 24 hours.

“We never marketed Pilot to anyone. Agents found it, found it useful, and recommended it to each other,” says Razvan Roman, cofounder and CEO of Pilot Protocol. “Our customers are not people — they are agents — and the autonomous economy many predict for the future is already operating on this network.”

An app marketplace built for agents
Pilot goes beyond discovery: the platform includes an application marketplace — the Pilot App Store — designed so agents can identify, evaluate, and install software tools autonomously. In the two weeks since the marketplace launched, agents have performed more than 30,000 autonomous installations of partner apps.

One example cited by the company: smolmachines published its app on the Pilot App Store and recorded 3,000 agent-driven installations in a few days with no marketing spend, according to Binbin, CTO of smolmachines. “Agents came and started launching machines on their own,” he says.

Machine-to-machine payments and commerce
Pilot also introduces agent-to-agent payment capabilities, enabling autonomous software to exchange credits for completed work or buy services from other agents without relying on traditional payment methods. The feature is intended to enable automated commerce between autonomous systems.

Seed funding and infrastructure ambitions
The $4.5 million seed round was led by Version One Ventures, with participation from Precursor Ventures, Night Capital, Todd & Rahul Capital and angel investors Lenny Rachitsky and Ben Tossell. Boris Wertz, founder and general partner at Version One, describes Pilot as a foundational layer: “Every network for people was an application built on top of the Internet. Pilot is the layer below, where agents connect.”

The funding will support expansion of the network infrastructure, developer ecosystem, and commerce capabilities as Pilot aims to become a central connectivity platform for AI agents.

Why this infrastructure matters
Pilot is betting on the rise of autonomous systems in enterprises for use cases such as customer service, research, operations, and digital commerce. The company argues that enabling discovery, authentication, communication, and automated transactions between agents is a critical building block for that future.
