AI payroll infrastructure: CloudPay invests in Intermezzo’s $10M round

CloudPay has joined a $10 million funding round for Intermezzo, a Menlo Park startup building AI-powered payroll infrastructure that other software companies can embed rather than build themselves. The round also includes Crosslink Capital, UKG Ventures, Character Capital, Behind Genius Ventures and angel investors.

Intermezzo was founded by former Intuit technical leaders Siddharth Ram, now chief executive, and Kumar Ramanathan, now chief technology officer. The founders position the product for human capital management platforms, employer-of-record firms and payroll bureaus that want international payroll without assembling a patchwork of local vendors.

Many workforce platforms lack native payroll engines outside their home markets. Adding a country often means another provider, another data format and more manual work; Intermezzo says institutional knowledge frequently lives in spreadsheets and email. The company cites long processing cycles, high error rates and compliance risk when rules change as industry pain points.

AI payroll infrastructure: how Intermezzo works

Intermezzo offers a white-label API and a unified data model. Rather than customers reconstructing each country’s tax and filing logic, the company says it uses AI agents to pull source material and turn it into structured, machine-readable rules. Those rules feed a computational engine that handles gross-to-net calculations, statutory filings, payslip generation and ERP synchronization.

The firm claims this approach can compress a typical 20-day payroll cycle to about 24 hours and lift accuracy above 99 percent, while enabling on-demand runs instead of fixed calendars.

CloudPay’s participation is notable because the investor already operates in global payroll and payments. CloudPay chief executive Roland Folz said Intermezzo’s emphasis on automation, artificial intelligence and reducing complexity aligns with how CloudPay approaches product development and framed the stake as support for technology that can improve outcomes for customers across the payroll ecosystem. UKG Ventures’ Ed Park made a similar point, saying payroll is no longer a back-office chore but core business infrastructure and that UKG has seen firsthand how difficult multi-country pay can be.

For CloudPay the investment is strategic as well as financial. Intermezzo is selling infrastructure to the same class of platforms and service providers that sit around enterprise payroll. If the API model works, established processors gain a way to expand country coverage without rebuilding local engines from scratch; if it does not, the industry’s fragmented vendor model will remain the default. The founders argue the market is ready for a programmable payroll layer comparable to modern payments infrastructure: one integration, many jurisdictions and rules that update as regulations change.
