Recent industry rumours suggest the Galaxy S27 Ultra could adopt silicon-carbon batteries, potentially allowing a noticeably larger battery without increasing the phone’s physical size.
Silicon-carbon batteries could raise capacity without bigger chassis
Silicon-carbon battery chemistry offers higher energy density than conventional lithium-ion cells, a benefit embraced by several Chinese smartphone makers. For years Samsung’s flagships have kept battery capacity largely unchanged at 5,000mAh, and supply-chain reports indicate the S27 Ultra might combine silicon-carbon technology with roughly 700mAh more capacity than the previous generation. That combination could extend battery life while preserving — or even reducing — device thickness and weight.
Samsung cautious as durability and reliability remain concerns
Despite the potential gains, Samsung and Apple have taken a more conservative approach to adopting new battery chemistries. Silicon-carbon remains relatively new in smartphones and its long-term durability data is still limited compared with conventional lithium-ion batteries. For manufacturers that ship hundreds of millions of devices annually, reliability and longevity are critical considerations; about 9.4% of survey respondents said Samsung should avoid the technology until it is more thoroughly proven.
User trade-offs: capacity versus comfort
Not all users prioritise battery capacity: roughly 13.3% of survey participants said they would rather keep a comfortable, lightweight design than carry a heavier phone for longer battery life. The current Galaxy S26 Ultra already features a 6.9-inch display and weighs around 214 grams. Increasing capacity using traditional lithium-ion cells typically requires extra internal space, which can add thickness and weight — rumours warn a simple capacity increase could push thickness beyond 7.9mm.
If Samsung does introduce silicon-carbon batteries in the Galaxy S27 Ultra, it would mark one of the most significant hardware changes to the Galaxy S line in years, potentially improving battery life while maintaining the premium design users expect. Until Samsung officially unveils the device, reported specifications remain based on industry rumours and supply-chain reports.
