Apple’s long-rumored foldable iPhone has surfaced in rumors under several names, including iPhone Duo, iPhone Ultra and iPhone Fold, though there is no evidence that Apple will officially use the iPhone Duo name.
Why iPhone Duo is being suggested
The Duo label would reference the device’s dual screens; Apple has used Duo branding before for its PowerBook Duo laptops in the 1990s and for the MagSafe Duo Charger in the early 2020s. That history is cited in rumors as a possible reason Apple might choose the iPhone Duo name.
Other naming possibilities and related history
Some reports have pointed to iPhone Ultra as the likely name. In April, reporter Filipe Espósito cited a source familiar with Apple’s plans who said the foldable iPhone will be named iPhone Ultra. Mark Gurman has also said many Apple employees refer to the device internally as iPhone Ultra, though he has not firmly reported it as the official name.
Apple has applied Ultra branding across several products and technologies, including Apple Watch Ultra, CarPlay Ultra and its M1 Ultra, M2 Ultra, M3 Ultra and M5 Ultra chips. Competing manufacturers also use Ultra and Fold naming, for example Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold8.
Potential branding concerns
Some observers note that Duo has prior use elsewhere: Microsoft released a dual-screen Android phone called the Surface Duo in 2020 that has since been discontinued, and Intel used Duo in its Core Duo and Core 2 Duo processor lines in the 2000s. That history could influence whether Apple selects or avoids the Duo name.
Apple is expected to unveil its foldable iPhone during its event next week, at which point it will become clear whether the device is named iPhone Ultra, iPhone Fold, iPhone Duo or something else.
