Gartner strategic technology trends for 2027 unveiled at IT Symposium

ORLANDO, Fla. — At the Gartner IT Symposium on Oct. 20, 2026, Gartner released its top strategic technology trends for 2027. Gene Alvarez, distinguished vice president analyst at Gartner, presented the firm’s findings and warned that current AI development creates systemic exposure. “The critical friction today is that AI systems operate in an architectural vacuum, generating software faster than humans can review it, creating unmanaged credential paths and binding processes to single-source vendor monopolies,” Alvarez said. “To prevent this systemic exposure, organizations must move from a passive observer of model capabilities to an active architect of organization, human and machine boundaries.”

Gartner said it reached its conclusions using a wide range of inputs, including venture capital funding, tracked markets, Gartner’s own hype cycles, new patents, analyst submissions and insights, and innovation profiles. The firm emphasized these are emerging technologies that will mature at different speeds.

Gartner strategic technology trends for 2027

1. Large quantitative models
Large quantitative models (LQMs) perform large-scale quantitative analyses, process complex equations and predict outcomes using mathematical equations and the laws of physics. Gartner said normal large language models (LLMs) struggle with logic because they are programmed to predict text rather than using numerical, time-series and science data for forecasts. Alvarez said numerical tasks can improve accuracy and enable proactive simulations for businesses and that “when you ask an LLM for an answer about math, you’re asking an English major to talk about calculus because it works with text, not math.” He added that businesses can use these mathematical analyses to make predictions and decisions and that LLMs will serve as the interface for prompting such analysis.

2. Speech reasoning models
Speech reasoning models are voice AI systems that focus on audio, recognize context in a person’s voice and determine next steps, for example sensing frustration and escalating a call to a human. Alvarez said these models can increase effective head count without additional staff and raise deflection rates on voice channels by understanding customer intent. He warned the systems need time to mature to handle inflection and tone and raise privacy and consent concerns because voice patterns are identifiable characteristics; companies will need to add this information to their privacy statements for regulatory compliance.

3. World models
World models use physics to enable physical AI and machines to understand and predict outcomes and to let autonomous agents simulate and test business strategies in advance. Alvarez used the example of driverless cars preparing for skidding in the rain by applying laws of physics and momentum. Gartner predicts that by 2031 businesses will be able to run 3D spatial simulations, such as a car accident, to determine possible outcomes before they happen. Companies can pilot world models by testing them against events that already occurred to evaluate readiness. Gartner also noted these models carry a high compute demand.

4. AI context platforms
AI context platforms are automated systems that scan an organization’s data and documentation so agents can interpret information in business-specific context. These platforms govern an agent’s ability to operate within an organization’s unique policies and integrate fragmented, structured and unstructured data. Alvarez urged businesses to evaluate interoperability capabilities and said: “Think about the context player layer as a new employee. They start to learn how you do business over time. The better you feed the data to it, the stronger the context layer will get.”

5. Agent coding harness
Agent coding harnesses are closed-loop control systems that manage the software development lifecycle (SDLC) and help write code in alignment with company protocol, reducing the need for manual code verification and helping control costs. Gartner said organizations that shift to harness-guided development should ensure developers lead the effort because the harness needs their knowledge to run efficiently. Alvarez added the harness will continue to learn and should be treated as an evolving asset.

6. AI agent identity
AI agents require identity and access management to govern privileges, data access and interactions with other agents. Gartner forecasted that 25% of enterprise breaches will be caused by ungoverned AI agents by 2028. In the release Alvarez said, “Applying dynamic identity controls allows organizations to replace high-risk static credentials with dynamic, policy-controlled access.”

7. Autonomous exposure remediation
Autonomous exposure remediation (AER) combines AI and automation to scan for, manage and fix security vulnerabilities, deploy patches and test code while in production. Gartner said AER helps embed security within agentic development and will become part of an organization’s coding harness.

8. Sovereign tech
Sovereign tech gives organizations control over hardware, software, databases and AI models to provide exit strategies from vendors and reduce vendor lock-in and dependence on foreign suppliers. Gartner predicts that by 2030 more than 75% of non-U.S.-based organizations will adopt digital sovereignty strategies to limit vendor lock-in and geopolitical risks.

9. Disposable applications
Disposable applications are built for a one-time, specific use and should have an expiration date once the business need is met; decommissioning should begin as soon as they no longer provide value. Gartner noted these applications can have higher maintenance costs than replacement costs and quoted Alvarez: “Now, this means we need to govern applications from creation to death, looking at the entire SDLC as well as the custom software that we buy off the shelf. We need to ask: How long is it delivering business value? And when it stops, how do we decommission it?”
