iPhone Duo: Unlock With Apple Watch to Skip the Touch ID Scan

The iPhone Duo uses a Touch ID sensor built into the side button for authentication, but if you wear a compatible Apple Watch you can skip the fingerprint scan and unlock your iPhone Duo with the watch instead. The feature, called Unlock with Apple Watch, isn’t new to iPhone but provides the closest thing to a seamless Face ID–like experience on iPhone Duo for now.

iPhone Duo: Turn on Unlock with Apple Watch

Open the Settings app on your iPhone Duo and tap Touch ID & Passcode, then enter your passcode. Scroll down to “Unlock with Nearby Devices” and toggle on the switch next to your Apple Watch. If you have more than one watch paired with your iPhone Duo, toggle it on for each one. Your Apple Watch must be a Series 9 or later, an Ultra 2 or later, or an SE 3 to work with this feature.

How to unlock your iPhone Duo with your Apple Watch

Make sure your Apple Watch is on your wrist, unlocked, and near your iPhone Duo. Wake the iPhone Duo by raising it or tapping the screen (opening it also wakes it if it’s closed). Swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen to dismiss the Lock Screen; from there your Apple Watch will handle the authentication. The swipe-up gesture is still required to get past the Lock Screen, though you can disable that additional step in Settings.
