Apple has acknowledged an issue affecting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units and advised customers who experience problems to contact AppleCare for a replacement.
Apple said early user response to the iPhone Duo has been very positive and that developers are rapidly updating apps for the device’s form factor. The company confirmed it is aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units and recommended that users with display issues contact AppleCare for a replacement.
Apple did not specify what causes the cracking or whether a software or hardware fix is planned. Affected users have received in-store replacements, but limited stock has meant some customers must wait.
According to Apple, the problem is limited in scope: most users are not expected to see an issue with their iPhone Duo display, and the crack appears on affected units shortly after purchase. It is also reported that some images circulated as evidence of cracking are AI-generated, complicating efforts to assess the true scope of the problem.
Many of the iPhone Duos experiencing damage show a crack along the hinge on the lower half of the inner display. Users report a stuck feeling and sometimes a popping noise just before the damage appears.
iPhone Duo hinge and teardown findings
iFixit disassembled the iPhone Duo and identified several possible causes for the hinge failure. The teardown noted that multiple components converge at the hinge location and suggested it is possible a center support bar intended to retract is not doing so, which could lead to damage.
