The Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 share the same S11 chip, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage and a new Health Sensing System that measures heart rate every five seconds throughout the day, plus the same Readiness, Recovery HRV, daytime vitals, improved step tracking, hypertension and sleep apnea notifications, and Sleep Score — meaning the Ultra 4’s higher price does not buy more advanced everyday health tracking.
Apple Watch: prices, models and materials
The Apple Watch Series 12 starts at $399 for the aluminum model; titanium starts at $699 and a new ceramic option starts at $899. The Apple Watch Ultra 4 starts at $799. Hermès editions are available for both lines: Series 12 Hermès starts at $1,399 and Ultra Hermès starts at $1,499. The ceramic Series 12 is therefore more expensive than the Ultra despite being smaller and offering shorter battery life.
Design, sizes and build
The Series 12 uses a rounded design with a thinner case and front glass that curves at the edges, offered in aluminum, polished titanium or polished ceramic. Case sizes listed for aluminum and titanium are 42mm and 46mm; ceramic is marketed as 42mm and 46mm with actual heights of 43mm and 47mm. Case widths are: 42mm aluminum and titanium 37mm; 43mm ceramic 37mm; 46mm aluminum and titanium 40mm; 47mm ceramic 41mm. Case depths are 9.7mm for aluminum and titanium and 9.85mm for ceramic. Weight ranges from 31.5 to 52.9 grams depending on case size, material, finish and connectivity.
The Ultra 4 has a rugged design with a thicker case, slightly raised edges to protect a flat front crystal, and a blasted titanium case. It comes in a single 49mm case size with a 44mm case width and 12mm case depth. Natural titanium weighs 63.0 grams and black titanium 63.1 grams.
Displays, audio and controls
Display resolutions are: Series 12 42mm at 374 by 446 pixels and 46mm at 416 by 496 pixels; Ultra 4 at 422 by 514 pixels. Display areas are 970 sq mm (42mm) and 1,196 sq mm (46mm) for Series 12, and 1,245 sq mm for Ultra 4. Peak brightness is up to 2,000 nits on Series 12 and up to 3,000 nits on Ultra 4. The Ultra offers exclusive faces (Wayfinder, Modular Ultra and Orienteering) and Night Mode on Ultra faces. The Ultra also adds a customizable Action button, including Precision Start for workouts, and an 86-decibel Siren. Series 12 has a single speaker and a single microphone with Voice Isolation; Ultra 4 has dual speakers and a three-microphone array with beamforming and wind-noise mitigation.
Connectivity, GPS and satellite
Series 12 aluminum is available in GPS or GPS + Cellular configurations; titanium and ceramic Series 12 models are GPS + Cellular. All Ultra 4 models are GPS + Cellular. U.S. TDD cellular band support differs: Series 12 lists 5G n38, n40 and n41 and LTE 38, 39, 40 and 41; Ultra 4 adds 5G n53 and LTE 53 to those bands. Ultra 4 supports satellite communications for Emergency SOS, Messages and Find My. Series 12 uses precision L1 GPS and supports GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, QZSS and BeiDou; Ultra 4 uses precision dual-frequency GPS (L1 and L5) and supports GPS, Galileo, QZSS and BeiDou.
Water resistance, durability and environmental ratings
Series 12 is water resistant to 50m and suitable for swimming and snorkeling; its depth gauge and Depth app are rated to 6m. Ultra 4 is water resistant to 100m and suitable for swimming, snorkeling, high-speed water sports and recreational scuba diving to 40m, with a depth gauge and Depth app to 40m and EN13319 certification for recreational scuba diving. The Ultra is tested to MIL-STD 810H. Recommended ambient operating temperature for Series 12 is 0°C to 35°C; Ultra 4 lists an on-wrist operating temperature range of -20°C to 55°C. Both have an always-on altimeter; Series 12 operating altitude is 0m to 3,000m, while Ultra 4 expands the operating altitude from -500m to 9,000m.
Battery life and charging
Series 12 offers up to 24 hours of normal use, up to 38 hours in Low Power Mode, up to 10 hours of standard outdoor workout tracking and up to 25 hours in Extended Workout mode with full GPS and heart rate readings. Series 12 charges from 0 to 80% in about 30 minutes and 15 minutes of charging provides up to 12 hours of normal use.
Ultra 4 offers up to 50 hours of normal use, up to 84 hours in Low Power Mode, up to 18 hours of standard outdoor workout tracking and up to 45 hours in Max Extended Workout mode while retaining GPS readings every second. Ultra 4 charges from 0 to 80% in about 45 minutes and 15 minutes of charging provides up to 18 hours of normal use.
Who each watch is for
For most users, the Apple Watch Series 12 is presented as the better choice: it offers the same performance, health sensors, Readiness insights and Audio Intelligence features as the Ultra 4 in a thinner, lighter device, and the aluminum model costs $400 less, making it a stronger option for everyday use and regular workouts.
Ultra 4’s most broadly useful advantage is its battery life: longer endurance makes overnight wear and extended workouts easier to fit around charging. The Ultra’s satellite communications, precision dual-frequency GPS, greater water resistance, extended workout modes, Action button and brighter display address needs for hiking away from cellular coverage, recreational scuba diving and very long events that the Series 12 cannot fully meet.
Size and appearance are significant trade-offs: Ultra 4 is considerably bulkier and heavier despite offering a display only slightly larger than the 46mm Series 12, while Series 12 is more discreet and offers polished titanium and ceramic finishes. The guide recommends trying on the Ultra before buying if unsure about its size.
The decision narrows if you prefer the titanium Series 12, which starts at $699 — only $100 below the Ultra’s $799 starting price — making the Ultra’s longer battery life and additional hardware a reasonable extra expense if you accept the larger case. The $899 ceramic Series 12 is characterized as primarily a material and finish choice rather than offering more capabilities than the $799 Ultra.
