Are China’s cheaper, open-source AI models gaining ground?

Notable cases include Raffi Krikorian, CTO of a major web browser, who quickly tested Moonshot’s Kimi K3 and Z.ai GLM‑5.2 for daily use and found K3 “more responsive.” Market analysis platforms and app stores also recorded a massive surge in downloads for K3 after launch, forcing Moonshot to temporarily pause new subscriptions as demand outstripped capacity.
