Binance’s co-founder, Changpeng Zhao, has issued a warning to the cryptocurrency sector regarding a new tactic employed by North Korean hackers, particularly the notorious Lazarus Group. These cybercriminals are infiltrating digital asset firms by submitting fake resumes and job applications. The hackers disguise themselves as developers, security experts, and finance professionals, using stolen identities and well-crafted resumes to gain employment within these companies. Once inside, they can bypass external security measures, posing a significant threat to the industry’s integrity.
A recent investigation by a cybersecurity group has identified over 60 impostors linked to North Korean operations. These individuals have been caught applying for positions with government-issued IDs, LinkedIn profiles, and detailed portfolios. In some instances, they have submitted malware disguised as code updates during interviews or embedded malicious links in support tickets. The financial impact of these operations is substantial, with North Korean hackers reportedly stealing over $1.3 billion in cryptocurrency in 2024 alone.
In response, Binance and other platforms are urged to enhance their recruitment processes, provide better staff training, and collaborate on intelligence sharing to combat this growing threat.
