According to a Reddit post, Face ID authentication for specific actions such as unlocking a locked app can fail on the iPhone 18 Pro models; the device may freeze and eventually reboot to the lock screen. It is unclear how widespread the problem is — reports indicate it can be hit or miss and that not all users are affected.
Face ID setup errors and authentication failures
Other forum members report receiving a “Face ID is Not Available” message when attempting to set up Face ID, while some users say the devices do not always respect the “Require Attention for Face ID” setting when it is enabled.
Hardware relocation and expected software fix
On the iPhone 18 Pro models, Apple moved Face ID’s infrared camera underneath the top-left corner of the display to achieve a smaller Dynamic Island. It is unclear whether this hardware change is related to the reported Face ID problems. It is likely that Apple will address any new Face ID bugs in a future iOS 27 update.
