Facing ongoing US export restrictions on advanced semiconductors, China’s AI chipmakers are striving to develop a self-sufficient silicon ecosystem to challenge Nvidia’s dominance. The central debate is whether to rely on versatile GPUs or shift to specialized ASICs. The goal is no longer to replicate Nvidia but to establish a domestic chip ecosystem that can support leading Chinese AI models from companies like DeepSeek and Alibaba. As competition intensifies among key domestic players such as Huawei, Cambricon Technologies, and Moore Threads, the focus is on determining which path will shape the future of Chinese AI. Initially designed for video game graphics, GPUs were popularized by Nvidia in the 1990s with its GeForce 256, known as “the world’s first GPU.”
