How did Warren County lose millions to a scam?

Warren County is currently the focus of a criminal investigation following a major cybersecurity breach that resulted in the loss of $3.3 million of taxpayer money. The funds were transferred after the county’s treasurer’s office received two fraudulent invoices, purportedly from a company they had previously done business with. These invoices, sent in December, appeared legitimate, leading to the release of the money via electronic transfer. Cybersecurity expert Paul Tracey explained that such schemes, known as supply chain attacks, are increasingly common and largely preventable with proper policies. Despite the incident, some residents, like Jackson Donnelly, advocate for understanding rather than harsh criticism. Tracey emphasized the importance of direct communication with vendors to verify invoice authenticity and highlighted the vulnerability of even well-resourced entities to such scams, serving as a cautionary tale for smaller businesses.
