How is Skapion addressing the challenge of drone swarms in modern warfare?

The increasing use of affordable attack drones is transforming the dynamics of modern warfare, leading investors to support startups that offer alternatives to traditional air-defense systems. Skapion, a defense technology company, has secured $36 million in seed funding to develop systems that counter coordinated drone attacks. This funding round was co-led by UP Partners and Khosla Ventures, with contributions from Fusion VC, Stratos Ventures, TBD VC, and q Fund.

Skapion highlights the vulnerabilities in current air-defense frameworks, as recent conflicts have shown that low-cost drones have become a significant threat to military forces and critical infrastructure. While single drones can be intercepted, large-scale attacks create an economic challenge, with expensive interceptors being used against cheaper threats.

Instead of targeting individual drones, Skapion is developing a counter-swarm system to simultaneously engage multiple drones. This mobile platform aims to detect and neutralize drone swarms in challenging environments, working alongside military forces and infrastructure.

Co-founder and CEO Ido Bar-On emphasizes the importance of neutralizing swarms quickly and cost-effectively. The new funding will enable Skapion to speed up development, expand its engineering team, and focus on what they consider a critical defense challenge for the future.

The founding team, rooted in Israel’s air-defense sector, includes experienced professionals such as Brig. Gen. (Res.) Pini Yungman, who has worked on significant defense programs, and Ido Bar-On, with a background in defense and special operations. The team is also supported by experts in aerospace, robotics, autonomy, and defense technologies. The recent funding will facilitate further hiring, development, and collaboration with governments and defense partners in Israel, the U.S., and allied markets.
