A recent cyberattack on Latvia’s state-owned company, Latvijas Valsts Mezi (LVM), has highlighted vulnerabilities in the nation’s strategic infrastructure, according to Smart Administration and Regional Development Minister Edgars Tavars. The breach is particularly concerning as LVM is responsible for developing an electoral IT platform for the upcoming parliamentary elections. Minister Tavars urged state institutions to identify and address cybersecurity weaknesses in their systems, emphasizing confidence in Latvian IT specialists to prevent future incidents. The electronic voter register, completed before the breach, remains secure. LVM has responded by taking its external IT systems offline and limiting some internal communications. A foreign ransomware group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
