iPhone Duo: Apple execs explain the design, secrecy and $1,999 price

Apple’s new iPhone Duo was presented by CEO John Ternus and marketing chief Greg Joswiak as the result of deliberate timing, a distinct design philosophy and a tightly controlled secrecy effort, the executives said in a joint interview. They explained why Apple waited to release a foldable, how the hardware and software were rethought, and confirmed launch details and pricing.

Ternus said the company releases a product only when the idea meets Apple’s bar “for quality and durability, but also for design.” He described the Duo as “like a greenfield of opportunity for us because it was an opportunity to rethink so many different things.” According to the executives, that rethink guided both the device’s hardware proportions and its software behavior.

iPhone Duo design: aspect ratio and software

Apple evaluated other foldables and judged many designs “wasn’t particularly inspiring,” Joswiak said, adding that Apple’s approach was “twofold – no pun intended.” First, the company settled on a wider 1:1.4 aspect ratio to avoid devices that look like two phones “awkwardly stuck together.” Second, Apple focused on software to make the Duo “unlike any foldable that’s out there.”

Display materials and nano‑texture

Ternus said the Duo’s inner screen uses a polymer top layer rather than glass, which required developing an entirely new way to produce Apple’s nano-texture finish. He contrasted rival foldable screens as “kind of cheap-feeling plastic surfaces. They don’t feel good to touch, they’re kind of wavy, wrinkly.” On Apple’s approach, he added: “The nano-texture just wipes that all out. It’s beautifully flat. It feels amazing to touch and it’s incredibly durable.”

Secrecy and leaks

Joswiak said he is “super proud” Apple kept the project relatively secret: “We put the extra security on it. We didn’t talk about it to anybody. We had a very funny code name, which I won’t even repeat, that had nothing to do with it. But we said we’re going to keep this one extra secret because, look, people knew through leaks that we were working on a foldable.” He conceded that leakers “did get the aspect ratio right,” calling some discoveries “coincidental instances of people finding that an interesting aspect ratio. And this is when we said, okay, we’re going to really keep this one locked down – and it worked.”

Price and availability

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999. Ternus said: “Yes, it’s more expensive than the other phones, but we think it’s great value.” Joswiak added: “It’s called iPhone Duo for a reason. It’s like two products.” Pre-orders begin Friday, October 16, ahead of an October 23 launch. The full interview is available on YouTube.
