Apple fine-tunes iOS 27 ahead of September launch: Developer beta 4 brings practical tweaks and a few rollbacks
Apple continues to polish iOS 27 before the public release in September. The fourth developer beta is lighter than previous builds but still introduces several practical additions and a few reversions. Here’s what’s changed — from series management to new Siri and video settings.
What’s new in iOS 27 beta 4
Beta 4 focuses on targeted enhancements rather than sweeping redesigns. Apple is adding finer-grained controls across apps and Settings — automatic episode downloads, photo zoom-to-fill options, new ProRes encoding choices — while refining Siri’s interface.
TV app and media management
The Apple TV Settings now include an “Automatic Downloads” toggle. When enabled, iOS 27 automatically downloads the next two episodes of series you’ve started in “Continue Watching”; those files are removed after the episodes are watched. In Photos, a new “Zoom Photos to Fill” setting (on by default) performs a very slight crop for images that almost match the screen aspect ratio. Conversely, Apple removed a beta 3 feature that showed a subject cutout from the wallpaper in Notification Center during a swipe.
Siri: voices, previews and accessibility
The Siri voice selection UI has been redesigned. On devices without customizable voices, the screen now displays voices and accents for selection; on compatible devices, Apple offers more voice options — some still marked as “coming soon.” Customizable Siri voice support remains limited, for now, to iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone Air.
Siri settings gain more options: you can adjust the length of previews in the Siri app (up to five lines or no preview). For accessibility, an “Always Show Request” toggle will display a transcription of your request on screen. The Siri search/Ask interface also now shows an explanatory home screen when swiping into the feature.
Video, Wi‑Fi and AirPods
In Camera settings, the ProRes option adds a “ProRes Log” format with two encoding choices: Log and Log 2. Log 2 is presented as the newer format, retaining more information to provide greater latitude during color grading and post-capture editing.
Wi‑Fi controls gain more granularity: iOS 27 lets you enable or disable “Connectivity Assist” per Wi‑Fi network, independent of the global setting. Additionally, AirPods controls in Control Center have a refreshed look and add more options for Adaptive mode.
A code string hints at a dual-battery iPhone
Beta 4’s code contains references to an iPhone with two batteries, including strings such as “The batteries in this iPhone are performing as expected.” These entries could be interpreted as a technical hint toward a future device — for example, rumors of a foldable “Ultra” iPhone with a dual-battery design — but Apple provided no further details in this beta.
What this means for users
iOS 27 beta 4 mostly enhances user control and day-to-day experience: automatic downloads for binge-watching, clearer visibility into Siri interactions, finer video capture options and more granular Wi‑Fi controls. Nothing here dramatically alters the overall interface, but several of these tweaks should be noticeable in everyday use once the final release ships.
