Apple invited members of the media to test the new iPhone Duo after its event, and the first impressions are clear: the fold is still present but much less noticeable, and the device feels like a premium, well-built product starting at $1,999.
iPhone Duo design and display
The iPhone Duo closes to an outer 5.4-inch display and opens to a 7.6-inch inner display. Apple used a nano-texture polymer for the inner panel and a micro lens texture applied pixel by pixel using maskless laser lithography to create a perceptually flat, matte surface. That material cuts glare and reduces the visibility of the crease; the fold can still be seen in some lighting, but Apple’s approach makes it less apparent than competing devices. Apple also says viscoelastic adhesives let the display layers glide over each other, which may affect how the crease develops with use.
Camera placement and capabilities
There is no visible camera cutout on the inner display because the front camera is placed under the screen. It is effectively invisible on lighter backgrounds but becomes somewhat visible on darker ones. The outer display front camera is 12MP. The Duo has two rear cameras: a 48MP Fusion Main and a 48MP Ultra Wide; there is no Telephoto camera. The device offers 2x zoom via a cropped view from the Main camera rather than an optical telephoto module.
Software, multitasking and unique camera features
Apps adapt to the foldable form factor with controls positioned on the side of the displays, a new vertical dock, and a status bar that tucks into the corner for one-handed use. You can run two apps side by side or two instances of the same app, but each app occupies exactly half the display with no resize option; pairs of apps can be locked together to launch as a unit. Apps work when the Duo is open, closed or half-folded; when the device is propped, controls move to the bottom and iOS slides content away from the crease. Audio tuning also adapts automatically to the device’s position.
Camera software features include 4K Dolby Vision time-lapses that benefit from the Duo’s ability to prop itself up, and a Smart Take option that uses AI to capture a shot when everyone is in frame. The outer display can show Peanuts animations to encourage children to smile (Kid Cue), and Duo Preview lets a subject see themselves on the outer display for shot feedback. FaceTime can use both displays so someone can join a FaceTime call with the outer display camera while others use the inner screen (FaceTime Duo).
StandBy, hardware and pricing
StandBy works even when the iPhone Duo isn’t charging: folding the device in a tent orientation displays widgets, music, calendar, weather and more, and it can operate as a bedside clock with a new glow alarm clock feature. The iPhone Duo uses the same A20 Pro chip as the iPhone 18 Pro and includes Apple’s new C2 modem, which Apple says is faster and more efficient than the C1X and supports mmWave 5G speeds in the United States. The starting price is $1,999 for the 256GB model; storage goes up to 2TB for $3,199. Pre-orders begin Friday, October 16, with launch on October 23.
