iPhone Ultra 3 Rumored to Feature Larger Inner and Cover Displays

Apple is already planning a third-generation foldable iPhone, with the device’s first model billed under the iPhone Ultra name and a third iteration expected as early as 2028, according to Mark Gurman in his latest ‘Power On’ newsletter. The report says the third-generation foldable will have slightly larger displays on both the inside and the outside than its predecessors.

Gurman wrote that this year’s first foldable represents the device’s first “truly revolutionary design change,” and that Apple’s roadmap extends two generations beyond the initial model. A second-generation foldable is planned for 2027, followed by a third model as early as 2028.

He did not provide exact screen sizes for the third generation. The first foldable iPhone is expected to debut with a 7.8-inch inner display and a 5.5-inch cover display, so any increase would build on those dimensions.

The report states the third-generation foldable will offer slightly larger interior and exterior screens but gives no specific measurements. This is the first account to outline plans for a third-generation model, extending the foldable roadmap a year beyond previous expectations.

First and second-generation details

The initial foldable iPhone is anticipated to arrive this year with an ultra-thin design, Touch ID instead of Face ID, the A20 chip, a C2 modem, and the moniker “iPhone Ultra,” with a price around or above $2,000. Separately, a Weibo leaker known as “Digital Chat Station” has said the “iPhone Ultra 2” project has been formally approved for development and will likely reuse the first-generation model’s display. That second-generation model is expected to launch in fall 2027 alongside the 20th‑anniversary iPhone.
