Samsung Display has resumed work on its A7 OLED production plant in Asan, with structural work approved and completion expected by early 2028. The project had been put on hold in 2021 over demand concerns.
As one of the world’s top display makers and a leader in flexible OLED panel production, Samsung Display occupies a leading position as a supplier for foldable smartphones.
The company is expanding its investment in OLED production as foldables gain renewed traction. The rise in interest has been driven in part by the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the hype surrounding Apple’s first foldable iPhone, prompting Samsung Display to anticipate a considerable increase in demand for OLED panels.
OLED production outlook and drivers
Samsung Display expects higher demand particularly for flexible OLED panels, citing the expanding foldable smartphone lineup from Samsung’s mobile division and Apple’s entry into the segment. The company is also moving to bolster capacity to get ahead of Chinese advancement as well.
Structural work on the Asan A7 plant has been approved by Samsung Display, and the company projects the facility will be finished by early 2028.
