Samsung SDI announced it has partnered with General Motors to jointly develop prismatic batteries for GM’s next-generation electric vehicle models. The South Korean tech giant said these batteries will feature high energy density and fast charging.
Samsung is also acquiring GM’s 49.99% share in its partnership with Synergy Cells, which the two companies established in 2024 to build a battery plant in New Carlisle, Indiana. With the acquisition, Samsung says it now has the first independently operated battery production base in North America.

The battery plant is under construction. Once completed, Samsung will utilize the plant to produce high-tech batteries for use in various applications, including energy storage systems (ESS). Demand for ESS has been skyrocketing lately as it is one of the things required for artificial intelligence (AI) server farms.
