Terra Industries announced an additional $18 million in funding on Monday, bringing its seed round to $52 million. Investors in the round include Joe Lonsdale’s 8VC, Silent Ventures and Nova Global.
Since launching in 2024, Terra Industries has positioned itself as a leading name in African defense technology, planning to build autonomous systems and other infrastructure such as drones and mine-detecting combat vehicles. The company says it is on track to book $100 million in contracts — including at least one federal contract — and to generate revenue in the tens of millions of dollars by the end of the year.
Terra Industries’ funding and investor ties
The seed raise follows earlier rounds this year of $11.75 million and $22 million. 8VC, one of the new backers, is also an investor in U.S. defense firms including Anduril — which is said to be in talks to raise funding at a $100 billion valuation — and Shield AI.
Expansion plans and market positioning
Terra said it will use the fresh capital to expand manufacturing across the Global South, open a London office, increase hiring and accelerate product deployment. The company also hopes to open an office in San Francisco and build a presence in Washington, D.C. to better access capital and U.S. partnerships.
Terra identifies its competition as any defense company that has won government contracts, particularly suppliers from Turkey, China and Western countries. The company frames its mission around reducing African countries’ dependence on external security providers — a dependence the company says contributes to fragmented and unstable defense supply chains — by becoming a principal supplier of military and critical defense infrastructure.
