Google has officially launched Android 17 for Pixel devices, introducing numerous enhancements designed to optimize performance on large-screen devices like foldable phones and tablets. The update includes App Bubbles, a feature allowing users to multitask by opening apps in floating windows that remain on top of other applications. These bubbles can be managed from a dedicated bar on larger screens.
Android 17 also improves the Picture-in-Picture mode for desktop environments, making floating windows fully interactive. Developers can no longer restrict apps to portrait mode, encouraging them to create adaptive apps that work seamlessly across various screen sizes and orientations. This approach aims to improve user experience and retention, as well as increase app visibility in the Play Store.
The update enhances system performance by introducing app memory limits, reducing frame drops during gaming, and offering a 50:50 split-screen gaming mode for foldable devices. It also features the Continue On function, enabling seamless task transitions between devices, and strengthens privacy with temporary app permissions for location and contact sharing.
Security is bolstered with the Mark As Lost feature in Find Hub, allowing users to lock lost phones using biometric authentication, and improved Live Threat Detection. Android 17 supports the new Eclipsa Video format for better HDR playback and introduces the Extended HE-AAC encoder for superior audio quality. Camera capabilities are enhanced with the RAW14 image format and new APIs for identifying different camera types. Additionally, Bluetooth LE Audio support has been improved.
