The workers’ union at Samsung Electronics is steadfast in its demands and is ready to initiate a full strike starting tomorrow if their conditions are not met. Earlier today, negotiations between the union and Samsung’s management reached an impasse. Recognizing the potential economic impact on South Korea, the government has stepped in to mediate further discussions between the parties. Talks are set to resume later today at the Gyeonggi Employment and Labor Office, with South Korea’s Minister of Labor, Kim Young-hoon, leading the mediation efforts. The union is demanding that Samsung Electronics allocate 15% of its annual operating profit for employee bonuses and eliminate the existing bonus cap, currently set at 50% of the annual salary. Failure to meet these demands could lead to a general strike involving over 40,000 workers, posing a significant threat to semiconductor production at a time when the industry is vulnerable to disruptions.
