The Galaxy Z Fold 8 has sold faster than Samsung expected, breaking pre-order records in several countries and regions and even surpassing the all-time high previously held by the Galaxy Note 10. Because Samsung could not accurately gauge initial demand, the company increased manufacturing but is now facing a severe shortage of display driver integrated circuits (DDIs) for the new foldable.
Why DDIs are a bottleneck for the Galaxy Z Fold 8
Samsung’s DDIs for the Fold 8 are designed by its in-house System LSI division and manufactured by Taiwan’s United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) on a 22nm process node. UMC’s production capacity for these DDIs has reached its limit and the company cannot produce the chips any faster. Samsung requested an expedited “super hot run” service from UMC, but that measure cannot meet current needs.
To address the shortfall, Samsung plans to repurpose DDI stock that had been secured for next year’s product development and apply it directly to current mass production. Unlike general-purpose DRAM chips, which can be dynamically allocated across multiple smartphone models, DDIs are custom-built for each specific device.
Standard wafer processing for DDIs takes around four months. After wafers are processed they are combined with OLED panels made by Samsung Display, and the resulting display assemblies are delivered to Samsung MX for final assembly. Because of this sequence and the custom nature of the chips, DDIs have become a major manufacturing bottleneck for the Galaxy Z Fold 8.
Market context and the upcoming iPhone foldable
The Fold 8’s rapid sales and component constraints come ahead of a competitive test from Apple: the first foldable iPhone, rumored to be called the iPhone Ultra. That device could be announced on September 9, 2026, during Apple’s press event and might go on sale later this year. The arrival of Apple’s foldable will be a key market moment for both the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra.
