Android 17 introduces a native wireless migration that makes switching from an iPhone to an Android device easier by supporting more data types than before. The new method can now transfer Google accounts, passwords, Wi‑Fi credentials and eSIMs, in addition to the photos, videos, contacts, messages and calendars already supported. Transfers require an iPhone running iOS 26.3 or later.

The Android 17 update expands on-device native transfer capabilities. Beyond the usual items (photos, videos, contacts, messages, calendars), Google says the tool can copy Google accounts, restore passwords and replicate Wi‑Fi settings. Notably, eSIM support is built in, simplifying restoration of cellular service on the new device without separate steps.
Requirements and availability
For the migration to work, the iPhone must be running iOS 26.3 or newer. Android 17 with this transfer mechanism began rolling out in June on select Pixel devices and is expected to be offered on Samsung’s recently announced Galaxy Z Flip8 and Z Fold8.
Regulatory context that prompted the change
Google and Apple developed these native transfer tools in response to the European Union’s Digital Markets Act, which aims to reduce vendor lock‑in. The law requires data portability options and encouraged a streamlined process for eSIM transfers between competing platforms. Both manufacturers now offer integrated options during initial smartphone setup to import data from the other OS without using a separate app.
By centralizing more of a device’s essential elements, Android 17’s approach makes the move from iPhone more direct. How users respond once the feature sees broader rollout remains to be seen.
