Diffraqtion has closed an expanded pre-seed financing round totaling more than $10 million, with strategic investments from Lockheed Martin Ventures and Presidio Ventures joining existing backers. The funding will support construction of the company’s first fielded quantum camera and efforts to achieve orbital flight heritage via a hosted payload on a partner spacecraft for space domain awareness and defense reconnaissance missions.
The round caps the company’s pre-seed at over $10M and includes institutional investors Ground State Ventures, SBI US Gateway Fund (with Plug and Play), Collaborative Fund, TekVentures, Aether VC, milemark•capital, and ADIN.
Diffraqtion technology and performance
An MIT and University of Maryland spinout headquartered in Somerville, Massachusetts, Diffraqtion develops sub-diffraction-limit quantum camera platforms that capture photon properties directly in the optical domain. Rather than traditional pixel arrays that measure only intensity, the system’s passive photonic hardware sorts incoming light by spatial mode and shape before conversion, a process the company describes as light-shape sorting and spatial light shaping.
The platform leverages passive quantum estimation theory and spatial light control instead of quantum computing algorithms; it operates without qubits or cryogenic cooling. Company simulations show the ability to resolve features up to 20 times smaller than conventional optics and to execute target classification orders of magnitude faster using low-power onboard photonic inference.
Federal validation, flight heritage and applications
The financing follows seven months of technical validation. Diffraqtion completed on-sky terrestrial observatory demonstrations that distinguished closely spaced objects, advanced its DARPA Direct-to-Phase-II SBIR into a second option period, secured a NASA Phase I SBIR for orbital debris tracking, and won NASA’s $100,000 Space to Soil Challenge for adaptive onboard processing. The company plans to secure orbital flight heritage via a hosted payload to support space domain awareness (SDA) and defense reconnaissance missions.
Leadership and next steps
Diffraqtion is led by CEO and co-founder Johannes Galatsanos. The company has appointed Peter Kazlas, formerly of E Ink and QD Vision, as Head of Engineering to guide the transition to volume hardware manufacturing. The newly raised funds will be used to build the first fielded quantum camera and prepare it for hosted spacecraft deployment.
