Apple is reportedly working on an iPhone Air 2 that would measure around 5.2mm, making it thinner than the 5.6mm iPhone Air introduced last year.
Last year both Samsung and Apple briefly raced to produce the thinnest mainstream phones: Samsung launched the Galaxy S25 Edge at 5.8mm in May 2025, and Apple followed with the 5.6mm iPhone Air in September 2025. Neither device achieved the market impact their makers expected, and both companies initially appeared ready to step back from the ultra‑thin niche.
iPhone Air 2: what the leaks say
Early reports and simple arithmetic based on the original model point to a 5.2mm profile for an iPhone Air 2 if the rumours are accurate. The leaks focus on a thinner chassis as the headline change, but no official confirmation has been made public.
Could Samsung return with a Galaxy S27 Edge?
Rumours indicate Samsung may rejoin the ultra‑thin segment in 2027, potentially with a Galaxy S27 Edge that is even thinner than the S25 Edge. More importantly, Samsung could address one of the original Edge’s main criticisms — poor battery life — by applying Silicon‑Carbon batteries. With the launch of the Galaxy Z8 series, Samsung began using Silicon‑Carbon batteries, and the technology is expected to expand to more smartphone models next year, which could help future thin models last longer.
None of the devices mentioned — the iPhone Air 2 or a Galaxy S27 Edge — have been confirmed. Updates will follow if further rumours and leaks continue.
