iPhone Duo: Apple’s First Foldable with 15 New Features

Apple on September 9 unveiled the iPhone Duo, its first foldable dual-screen iPhone. Pre-orders open Friday, October 16, and the device will be available in Apple Stores and other major retailers on Friday, October 30.

iPhone Duo design and displays

The iPhone Duo features a folding design with a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display, and Apple says it is its thinnest ever iPhone when unfolded. Both screens offer ProMotion, an Always On capability and up to 3,000 nits of outdoor brightness. A nano-texture on the inner display is used to reduce glare and lessen the visibility of the crease.

The handset is built with a titanium enclosure, Ceramic Shield 2 on the front screen and Ceramic Shield on the rear, and carries an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance. Fingerprint authentication is integrated into the side button.

Cameras and video

The Duo has two rear cameras: a 48MP Main and an Ultra Wide. The system supports optical-quality 2x zoom and macro photography. The inner display includes an under-display FaceTime camera, while the outer display houses a 12MP Center Stage front camera.

New foldable-specific camera features include rear-camera selfies, outer-screen previews, automatic posing detection and animations designed to attract children’s attention (Kid Cue). The device supports 4K120 Dolby Vision recording and can apply Cinematic effects after capture at up to 60 fps.

Performance and battery

The iPhone Duo runs on Apple’s A20 Pro chip, which Apple says delivers up to 20% faster CPU performance and up to 40% faster GPU performance compared with the A19 Pro used in iPhone 17 Pro models. Improved vapor-chamber cooling is included to support demanding workloads.

Battery life is advertised as up to 31 hours of inner-display video playback or up to 44 hours when using the outer display. Wired charging can bring the device to 50 percent in around 20 minutes; wireless charging can reach 50 percent in around 30 minutes with a MagSafe or Qi2 charger.

Software and connectivity

iOS 27 ships preloaded on the Duo and includes Siri AI features described as personal context and onscreen awareness (in beta). The device uses Apple’s new C2 modem with 5G mmWave support and an N1 chip that provides Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread connectivity. The Duo is an eSIM-only design worldwide.

Support for USB-C Apple Pencil models on both displays will arrive later this year. Available colors at launch are Star White and Night Sky.

Apple’s first foldable represents the biggest shake-up of the iPhone design in almost a decade, and the company suggests it will be one of the harder devices in recent years to obtain for early buyers.
