Are GapMinder and Silicon Gardens Fueling a New Era in Software Development with Codeplain?

Romanian venture capital firm GapMinder has spearheaded a €2.6 million seed funding round for Slovenian startup Codeplain, with participation from Silicon Gardens. This investment aims to support the development of an AI platform capable of transforming plain-language software specifications into production-ready code. Silicon Gardens, known for its connections to companies like Sportradar and Photomath, co-led the funding effort.

Codeplain introduces a novel approach to software development, emphasizing the creation and maintenance of structured specifications over direct coding. This method, dubbed “Phoenix Architecture,” is inspired by the ideas of Chad Fowler and focuses on regenerating software from durable specifications rather than expanding complex codebases. This approach positions specifications as long-term assets while treating code as a regenerable resource.

The surge in agentic coding tools has resulted in a significant increase in code production, raising concerns about maintenance complexity. Dusan Omercevic, founder and CEO of Codeplain, highlighted the need to rethink maintenance strategies to prevent teams from being overwhelmed by this complexity.

Early adopters of Codeplain’s platform include companies like DevRev and HYCU, which utilize it to manage integrations with frequently changing external APIs. The platform enables teams to update specifications and regenerate implementations efficiently, bypassing the need for manual code revisions.

Founded by Omercevic, who previously established Cleanshelf and held key roles at SAP LeanIX and Zemanta, Codeplain operates from offices in Ljubljana, Berlin, and San Francisco. For GapMinder, this investment aligns with its focus on AI and software ventures in Eastern Europe, complementing recent additions to its portfolio such as InsiderCX and Design Verse.

Cosmin Ochisor, Partner at GapMinder Ventures, expressed confidence in Codeplain’s potential to revolutionize software development by shifting the focus from coding to managing specifications, especially as AI adoption continues to grow.
