Generative AI: Gartner’s Top Technology Trends for 2027

Gartner announced ten strategic technology trends for 2027 at its IT Symposium/Xpo in Orlando, framing the next phase of generative AI as extending beyond text and images toward numerical reasoning, contextual voice interactions and systems capable of acting autonomously. The framework stresses not only AI models but also the data, identity controls and infrastructure required to deploy them responsibly.

Generative AI’s next phase and three themes

Gartner groups the trends into three themes: leveraging AI beyond text, governing autonomous agents and designing technology for lasting agility. The emphasis is on expanding AI capabilities while managing security risks and building more adaptable technology environments.

The ten strategic trends for 2027

1. Large quantitative models (LQMs)
LQMs are designed to work with numerical information and target use cases such as financial risk assessment, supply chain planning and energy forecasting. Gartner expects LQMs to take over more than one-quarter of strategic forecasting and operational modelling tasks currently performed by large language models by 2030.

2. Speech reasoning models
These models interpret audio and track conversational context to handle follow-up questions, misunderstandings and changing circumstances. Gartner forecasts that speech reasoning models will independently manage more than 70% of enterprise voice interactions by 2030.

3. World models
World models create representations of physical or virtual environments so systems can simulate possible outcomes before acting. In robotics, for example, this helps autonomous machines anticipate effects on surrounding objects and conditions, using simulation to inform decisions before committing resources or physical action.

4. AI context platforms
AI context platforms assemble the business-relevant background information agents need to act in line with organisational objectives and address fragmented knowledge. Gartner projects that emphasising semantics in AI-ready data could improve agentic AI accuracy by up to 80% while reducing costs by as much as 60%; these are Gartner’s projected outcomes rather than guaranteed results for every organisation.

5. AI coding agent harness
As coding agents take on more software development work, an AI coding agent harness connects development tools with enterprise context, verification processes and feedback. The focus shifts from code generation alone to testing and evaluating changes, with quality, security and maintainability remaining key concerns.

6. AI agent identity
AI agent identity covers how organisations identify, authorise and oversee software acting on behalf of people or businesses, establishing permissions and ownership to enable accountability. Gartner expects AI agent abuse to account for one-quarter of enterprise security breaches by 2028, underscoring the need to extend identity and access management to software agents.

7. Autonomous exposure remediation
This trend links security detection with automated corrective actions, using AI to identify, prioritise and address vulnerabilities, including patching and testing. The operational challenge is accelerating remediation without losing oversight of potentially disruptive changes and ensuring safeguards to detect and reverse unsuccessful fixes.

8. SovereignTech
SovereignTech concerns how organisations manage dependencies on technology providers, jurisdictions and infrastructure, including decisions about where systems operate and which legal frameworks apply. Gartner anticipates that more than three-quarters of organisations outside the United States will have digital sovereignty strategies by 2030.

9. Disposable applications
Disposable applications are built for a specific purpose and retired when that purpose ends. As AI lowers barriers to software creation, organisations may increasingly choose temporary tools, which creates a need to plan for retirement and replacement from the outset to avoid turning short-lived applications into maintenance burdens.

10. Wetware as a service (WaaS)
WaaS offers remote access to biological or synthetic biological systems for computation, proposed as a potential response to the energy and environmental constraints of scaling silicon-based computing. Gartner describes the concept as emerging, with practical enterprise adoption dependent on how these biological systems develop and integrate with existing environments.

What the trends mean for technology leaders

Gartner’s 2027 outlook signals a broader shift in enterprise priorities: beyond new AI capabilities, organisations must manage machine identities, validate automated work and retain flexibility over critical technology dependencies. The ten trends are not a single roadmap for every business; their relevance depends on operating model, security requirements, infrastructure and tolerance for emerging risks. For CIOs the central task is to assess where greater autonomy can deliver measurable value while ensuring systems remain secure, accountable and adaptable, since the next phase of enterprise AI will depend not only on what models can do but on how effectively organisations govern and support them.
