Has Inner Logic secured $11.5M to advance medical device autonomy?

Inner Logic announced an $11.5 million seed round to build a simulation infrastructure for designing, testing, and validating large-scale procedural devices—an effort the company describes as essential to achieving surgical autonomy. The Baltimore-based startup, formerly known as Semaphor, was co-founded by Tito Porras, MD; Mathias Unberath, PhD; and Axel Krieger, PhD.

Funding and investors
The $11.5M round was co-led by General Catalyst and Bison Ventures, with participation from J2VP, Defined, PTX, Valia Ventures, Page One, Alumni Ventures, and Flare. Inner Logic says the capital will accelerate development of its simulation platform and the validation capabilities required for both conventional and autonomous devices.

From physical experimentation to simulation
Medical device design still relies heavily on physical iteration—prototypes, cadaver labs, and animal testing—which is costly and explores only a limited set of clinical scenarios. Inner Logic aims to shift much of that work into simulation, enabling teams to test device variants across thousands of virtual patients built from real clinical data. The company argues this approach can capture anatomical variation, imaging conditions, and failure modes that physical testing alone cannot feasibly cover.

Technology and the promise of surgical autonomy
Inner Logic’s platform combines virtual patient models derived from clinical data with simulated procedural environments so that lessons learned in simulation “hold up” in the real world. For conventional devices (valves, catheters, etc.), this accelerates iteration and broadens the tested population. For autonomous systems, the company contends simulation is indispensable: the variability across anatomies and clinical situations is too vast to be addressed solely through physical tests, and simulation provides the data and scenarios needed to develop safe algorithms.

Founding team and scientific credibility
The founders come out of Johns Hopkins research labs. Tito Porras, MD, left a neurosurgery residency at Johns Hopkins to found the company. Mathias Unberath, PhD, is a recognized researcher in computer vision and simulation, and Axel Krieger, PhD, is an associate professor whose robot performed the first autonomous laparoscopic surgery on a living animal. Together they are authors on more than 400 peer‑reviewed publications and inventors on over 40 patents—credentials the company highlights to bolster its scientific credibility.

Expected impact and implicit limits
Inner Logic positions itself as the infrastructure layer that device manufacturers can use to develop and demonstrate intelligent systems prior to clinical deployment.
